PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates are definitively over .500 for the first time since they finished their only non-losing season, a .500 finish in 2014. The Pirates have scratched and clawed all season to get to a record of over .500. Some great trades and lineup changes by management has brought the best out of the Pirates roster.
Pirates shortstop Elvis Andrus commented on his team's performance: "We really have the desire to win. We have a lot of good players here and some of us are still realizing our potential. Personally, I had a rough season last year...But management has shown a lot of confidence in our players and has done everything they can to get us to be confident in ourselves. I think that's been the difference for us this year."
Not all players were given the chance to be confident with themselves, but for one player that proved to be a difference maker. "I was awful when I started this year," said Pirates' center fielder Endy Chavez. "I couldn't buy a hit and I paid for it. I got bumped down the order and I had to prove to my team I could still hit and play. I'm happy to have been given a wake up call and being shown I have to step up my game. I think I've done that and the team as a whole has done that together."
With 17 games left, the Pirates need just 4 more wins to finish the season with a winning record. However, a winning record is not good enough for the Pirates.
"We want 95 wins," said GM Vin Pino. "We want to win out the rest of the season with 17 in a row. We know it's going to be tough, but if you don't have high goals you won't get anywhere. That doesn't just go for baseball, it goes for life as well."
