PITTSBURGH -- "PITTSBURRRRRGH!!! YEEEESSSSS!!!!" The soon to be infamous quote by Pittsburgh Pirates announcer Gary Cohen defines a historic season. The Pittsburgh Pirates are officially a winning team. Yes. The Pittsburgh Pirates are a winning team.
The Pirates set out this season and each of the last three seasons to have a winning season. Pirates GM Vin Pino described his feelings after Saturday's win as, "Phenomenal."
For the first time in franchise history, the Pirates have enough wins to finish the regular season with an above .500 record. On Friday, lefty George Gabler secured the win to ensure Pittsburgh as a non-losing team this year, and trade deadline acquisition Anthony Reyes secured the 82nd victory for his new team on Saturday. Ironically enough, the man who Reyes replaced in the rotation (Jason Hirsh) secured the save.
Pittsburgh, while definitely ecstatic, are still not satisfied. After his Saturday win, Anthony Reyes commented, "We're not done yet. There are still more games left on the schedule and we're gonna play hard every day until all 162 games are in the books. As a team, we're trying to play spoilers and build a great season as a foundation for success next season. We'd really like to knock Houston out of that 3rd place slot and make Chicago and Cincy worried about us next year. With some extra cash to spend this year, I'm sure our core players are going to be happy to get some help and make a run at the Wild Card next year."
GM Vin Pino has done nothing but appease Pirates fans, and because of that the fan base is growing. Pino has certainly taken the necessary steps to move towards playoff contention and 82 wins has proved that this team can in fact win more than it loses.
