PITTSBURGH -- Today is Wednesday, and Wednesday is "Hump" day. No, not that type of hump. You should be doing that with your girlfriend or wife every day. Wednesday, or Hump day, is the best day to talk about the Pirates' problems. The biggest obstacle for the Pirates has been, getting over that proverbial hump.
The Pittsburgh franchise has historically never been over the hump, at least not for an extended period of time, and never by the end of the season. Pittsburgh owner and GM Vin Pino is in his 4th year in control of the team, and it is no secret that he has been looking to give the franchise its first finish over .500 in team history. However, it seems that no matter what the team does, some sort of obstacle arises, or maybe its just another hump in the road.
Between Jack Willis' injuries (he hasn't been healthy since his rookie season) and losing free agents to the almighty San Francisco (though partly due to poor choices made by ownership) the Pirates have struggled.
The one thing that has been successful for the Pirates has been the development of stud prospects Dave Parker and Elvis Andrus. Unfortunately, as these players have gotten better, players like Jason Hirsh and Adrian Gonzalez have had poor seasons and has made for a disappointing win total thus far.
Hopefully today's games and recent trades will boost the spirits of the Pirates franchise and push them closer to their goal of a winning percentage higher than .500.
